The past few days have been utterly chaotic, and for once I don't mind it terribly. Only a little. Since I haven't had the chance to develop any new content in that time, here's something I did just before my major upheaval.
Check it (and a swell little tutorial) out after the jump!
I spent the majority of my summer with my boyfriend, and his parents have been so generous I thought I'd give something back. I knew I'd bake something for them, since baking is my forte, but I wanted to give them something that would last a little longer. I was looking around my room for inspiration when it hit me. I had only used 4 out of the 6 clippings of the succulent plant I had bought for college. I should give them the others! Succulents are great because they require so little maintenance (water them once a month max) and are, quite frankly, adorable.
I picked out my best mason jar and filled it with soil, being sure to put a good level of rocks and gravel at the bottom for drainage. Don't want the poor dear to drown.
After that I spiced things up a bit with a little decoration. I used a simple toothpick, some plain white card stock, and a thin, flexible wire to make it. All you have to do is:
1. Cut out the shape of your flag (whether in fabric, tape, or paper) twice. Make sure it's about a half inch longer than you need, because *spoiler alert* you're going to wrap it around the toothpick. Also, now would be the time to write or draw something on it.
2. Cut a length of wire just a tiny bit shorter than the flag.
3. Sandwich the wire between the two flags, and glue the two pieces to and around the wire.
4. Bend it and shape it however you'd like, just make sure it is wrapped at least once around the toothpick. It wouldn't hurt to add a dab of glue for safety.
5. Watch your friends/family positively coo over this adorable little addition!
Anywho, after I finished planting the succulent and ensuring it was certifiably adorable, I made some delicious no-bakes, a favorite of theirs.
I personally had trouble restraining myself to only one small cookie.
Here is the new Thompson family succulent, all wrapped up and ready to go with his short-lived compadres. I like to think he was setting sail into a bold new world (but he's not going to conquer any lands, at least not yet).
